Przed przeobrażeniem w formę młodocianą leptocefale dryfują w wodach pelagialnych, u niektórych gatunków nawet do trzech lat. Jako wyjątki wśród innych kręgowców we krwi nie mają ani krwinek czerwonych ani hemoglobiny. Stadium leptocephalus jest drugą fazą przeobrażenia. Pierwsza nazywana jest stadium preleptocephalus. |
