Hij werd in 1945 tot priester gewijd bij de dominicanen en doceerde vervolgens theologie in Genève en Fribourg. Als theoloog bestrijdt hij het totalitarisme en het marxisme en streeft hij de dialoog en de verzoening met de Joden na. In 2003 wordt hij kardinaal-diaken gecreëerd door paus Johannes Paulus II, nadat hij benoemd was tot titelvoerend bisschop van Tullia. Zijn titelkerk in Rome is Santi Domenico e Sisto. Wegens zijn leeftijd is hij niet stemgerechtigd in een conclaaf.
