Durch die partielle oder vollständige Substitution der Wasserstoff-Atome in den Hydroxy-Gruppen der Cellulose entstehen verschiedene Cellulosether wie Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), Methylcellulose (MC), Ethylcellulose (EC) oder Hydroxyethylencellulose (HEC). Diese Reaktion wird als Veretherung bezeichnet. Die Cellulose wird in einem thermokatalytischen Verfahren aus Holz gewonnen.
