has gloss	eng: The Yan Emperor, or Yandi, lived in China about 4,000 years ago. According to a folk tale, Shennong was the first Chinese tribe. The Yan Emperor was a descendant of Shennong. Or, more likely, the term Flame Emperor was a title, held by dynastic succession, with Shennong, at least posthumously, being known as Yandi. Accordingly, the term Flame Emperors would be generally be more correct. The succession of Flame Emperors, from Shennong, the first Yandi, to the last, defeated by Huangdi, may have lasted some 500 years.

has gloss	fra: Yandi 炎帝 parfois appelé Chidi 赤帝 (empereur rouge) est un souverain mythique de l’antiquité chinoise. Il est considéré avec Huangdi (son allié ou frère selon les versions) comme l’ ancêtre des Huaxia (1) en qui se reconnaissent les Chinois Han. Il est souvent identifié avec Shennong, ou considéré comme un de ses descendants. Une opinion moins répandue voit en lui Zhurong, dieu du feu, du fait de son nom (yan, “incendie”). Le Liji en fait l’un des Cinq empereurs. Wang Yi (2) des Han orientaux, s’appuyant sur la théorie des Cinq éléments, lui attribue le rôle d’empereur du Sud lié au feu et à la couleur rouge (Huangdi est l’empereur du Centre, lié à la terre et à la couleur jaune). Assimilé à Shennong, il est l’un des Trois augustes.
