As with many 19th century publications, an edition was issued in parts; for example, the eighth edition was issued in 32 monthly parts.

Edito dalla casa editrice Justus Perthes di Gotha, fu pubblicato in dieci edizioni dal 1816 al 1944; deve il suo nome al cartografo tedesco Adolf Stieler (1775-1836), che ne curò la prima edizione.

De atlas werd uitgebracht door Justus Perthes in Gotha (opgericht in 1785, inmiddels opgenomen in de Ernst Klett-Verlag) en verscheen in tien edities van 1817 tot 1945. Zoals vele publicaties uit die tijd zijn alle edities verschenen in afleveringen. Zo verscheen bijvoorbeeld de 8ste druk in 32 maandelijkse afleveringen van 1888-91. Eenmaal compleet, verschenen dan vrijwel jaarlijks geactualiseerde herdrukken van de atlas, zelfs als inmiddels een begin was gemaakt met een nieuwe editie.
