The proposition was a ballot initiative for the November 4, 2008, general election restricting marriage to male-female couples, in response to a Californias Supreme Court ruling that same-sex marriage was legal in May 2008, less than six months prior. During the period of time between the ruling by the Supreme Court and ratification of the vote of Proposition 8, 18,000 same-sex couples, including some high-profile celebrities were married up to and including the election day.
