Published initially by Herder, a long-established German theological publisher beginning in 1988, it is now published by the Belgian company Brepols, a major specialized academic publisher in the humanities. More than 50 texts have so far appeared, of which 36 were edited by Herder.

Přípravu publikací řídí Verein zur Förderung der Fontes Christiani / Fontes Christiani Institute při univerzitě v Bochumi. Podobně jako ve francouzské ediční řadě Sources chrétiennes obsahují jednotlivé svazky kritický text v originále a moderní německý překlad.
