The tree ranges from southern Ontario and Quebec, south to Tennessee, west to northeastern Kansas, and north to Minnesota. Its preferred habitat is moist but well-drained sandy loam, loam, or silt loam soil, mixed with other hardwoods; it is moderately shade-tolerant .
