has gloss | eng: Sweet Williams Ghost is a folk song, collected by Francis James Child in 1868 as Child ballad number 77. It exists in many forms but all versions recount a similar story. It was printed in Allan Ramsays The Tea-Table Miscellany in 1740, and again in Thomas Percys Reliques of Ancient English Poetry in 1765. Percy suggested that the last two stanzas of the version he published were later additions, but that the details of the story they recounted (specifically the death of Margaret upon Williams grave) were original. |
