The term was adopted by Australian surfer and intellectual, Dan Webber, who suggests that the mind emerges from the confluence of spatial and temporal relations, which he portrays metaphorically as a breaking wave. The rational framework for Surfism is based on the notion of embodied cognition (EC), which characterises the mind as physically grounded in its situated presence. At its core, Surfism distinguishes between spatial and temporal relations based on the role of optic flow in spatial perception. The surfing metaphor represents the structural coherence of perception derived from the triadic relations inherent in spatial perception. The interplay between temporal relations, which are monadic, and spatial relations, which are dyadic, determines the individual's ability to engage spatio-temporal relations, which are triadic.
