The launch sites are either in antarctica or in the arctic region to make uninterrupted observation of the sun over several days possible. The telescope has a 1 meter primary mirror that directs the 1 kW of solar radiation to the first focal point where 99% of the radiation is reflected out of the telescope, the remaining light is transferred into several instruments.

has gloss	deu: Sunrise ist ein ballongetragenes Spiegelteleskop zur Sonnenbeobachtung. Es verfügt über ein leichtes Spiegelsystem aus Cesic mit einer Apertur von 1 Meter. Mit einem Heliumballon ist das Teleskop auf 36 Kilometer Höhe gebracht worden, wodurch Beobachtungen im UV-Bereich ungehindert durch die Atmosphäre möglich sind. Die Oberfläche der Sonne und die Verteilung ihrer Magnetfelder soll mit einer räumlichen Auflösung von 35 Kilometer pro Pixel und einer zeitlichen Auflösung von 5 s gemessen werden. Dazu sind drei gleichzeitig beobachtende Instrumente (UV-Bildsensor, Magnetogramm, Polarisationsspektrometer) an Bord. Es handelt sich um das größte Sonnenteleskop, das je die Erde verlassen hat.
