Established in 1880, the market encompasses an entire block northwest of the Metropolitan Cathedral of San José. The market with a complex of narrow alleys contains over 200 stalls with an enormous range of items from snakeskin boots and cowboy saddles to herbal remedies, flowers and cooked meals. To the north is the Mercado Borbón, which specialises in food, with numerous butchers, fishmongers and fruit vendors located there.
