has gloss	eng: The vast majority of placenames in Ireland are anglicisations of Irish language (Gaeilge) names. However, some names come directly from the English language, and a handful come from Old Norse. The study of placenames in Ireland unveils features of the country's history and geography, and the development of the Irish language. The name of Ireland itself comes from the Gaeilge name Éire, added to the Germanic word land. In mythology, Éire was an Irish goddess of the land and of sovereignty (see Ériu).

has gloss	nld: Plaatsnamen in Ierland kunnen afkomstig zijn uit drie mogelijke talen: de meeste plaatsnamen zijn afkomstig uit het Iers, maar bestaan nu in een verengelste versie. Verengelsing gebeurde door het fonetisch neerschrijven van het Iers, door het vertalen van Ierse begrippen of door een combinatie van beide. Daarbij zijn er logischerwijs heel wat fouten gemaakt. Verder zijn er ook nog plaatsnamen in het Engels en het Oudnoors. Deze laatste dateren uit de middeleeuwen, toen de Vikingen Ierland veroverden.
