The journal was established in 1989 by postgraduate researchers from the Institute—the largest archaeological department in the UK and one of the largest in the world—with its inaugural issue published the following year. PIA was initially conceived as a venue for publishing research papers produced by UCL archaeology postgrads and staff on new findings and novel approaches to archaeological theory.
