Cette distinction ne porte pas sur la rigueur de largument, même si la prédominance des valeurs chiffrées peut parfois induire une connotation négative pour l'argument qualitatif, qui devient alors synonyme de « avec les mains ».

has gloss	heb: הוכחה בנפנופי ידיים היא כינוי (הנפוץ בעיקר במתמטיקה ובפיזיקה) לטיעון שמטרתו לשכנע את השומעים, אך איננו הוכחה פורמלית ומלאה. הכינוי משמש פעמים רבות לגנאי ("במקום ללמד כמו שצריך המרצה מראה לנו רק נפנופי ידיים"), אך לעתים להוכחה בנפנופי ידיים יש תפקיד מתודי חשוב, משום שהיא נותנת הבנה של מהות הבעיה והפתרון, הבנה שקשה לקבל בתוך עיון בהוכחה ארוכה ומסובכת. מקור הכינוי הוא הנטייה של מרצים להסביר בתנועות ידיים נמרצות מושגים או הוכחות מסובכות.
