Malta produces only about 20% of its food needs, has limited freshwater supplies, and has no domestic energy sources. Die zwei traditionellen Wirtschaftszweige sind Landwirtschaft und Fischerei, wobei die Fischerei auf Malta heute unbedeutend ist und die Landwirtschaft nicht mehr viel Bedeutung hat. Gozo lebt dagegen noch heute hauptsächlich von der Landwirtschaft und der Fischerei. Der größte Arbeitgeber des Landes ist die Malta Drydocks, die zweitgrößte Werft Europas. Auch mit Libyen und der Volksrepublik China treibt Malta bevorzugt Handel. So gibt es auch eine eigene chinesische Werft in Valetta. Die Befürchtungen diese Beziehungen durch einen EU-Beitritt zu verlieren spaltete die Bevölkerung stark in pro und contra Beitritt. |
