Its source is in the department of Francisco Morazán, near Lepaterique (south-west Tegucigalpa), and from there it flows North through the city of Tegucigalpa, then South through the department of El Paraíso, and the department and city of Choluteca. The mouth of the river -located among wetland- is near the coastal town of Cedeño, on the Gulf of Fonseca.

Pradžioje teka į rytus, vėliau į šiaurę per Tegusigalpą. Toliau daro vingį į pietryčius ir teka El Paraiso departamentu (trumpame ruože sudaro Hondūro-Nikaragvos sieną), o žemupyje teka į pietvakarius Čolutekos departamentu. Įteka į Fonsekos įlanką, sudaro pelkėtą deltą.

has gloss	nld: De Choluteca is een rivier in het zuiden van Honduras. Ter plaatse wordt hij behalve Choluteca ook wel Río Grande ofwel Grote Rivier genoemd. De bron ligt in het departement Francisco Morazán, ten zuidwesten van Tegucigalpa vlak bij Lepaterique. Daarvandaan stroomt de rivier noordwaarts door Tegucigalpa. Tot 1938 vormde de Choluteca de grens tussen Tegucigalpa en Comayagüela. Na Tegucigalpa buigt de rivier naar het zuiden en stroomt vervolgens door de departementen El Paraíso en Choluteca. De rivier mondt uit in de Golf van Fonseca, bij het kustplaatsje Cedeño.
