has glossita: Con il nome di Child Ballads si intende comunemente il corpus di ballate tradizionali inglesi e scozzesi (accompagnate dalle loro varianti irlandesi e americane) riconosciute come autentiche e catalogate dallo studioso statunitense Francis James Child (1825 - 1896), dell’Università di Harvard, nei cinque volumi delle sue English and Scottish Popular Ballads, pubblicati tra il 1882 e il 1898 e più volte ristampati. Da allora la balladry angloscozzese ha nell’opera del Child il suo canone pressoché intangibile. Il nome di Child Ballads significa Ballate Child (dal nome dello studioso autore della sua catalogazione e studio), e non Ballate per bambini come molti credono: gli argomenti usuali delle ballate tradizionali ne fanno, anzi, tuttaltro che delle canzoni per linfanzia.

Samlingen ble publisert under tittelen The English and Scottish Popular Ballads i ti bind mellom 1882 og 1898. Balladene er av ulik alder; for eksempel ble en versjon av «A Gest of Robyn Hode» ble trykket sent i det 15. århundre eller tidlig i det 16. århundre, og manuskriptet med «Judas» er fra det 13. århundre. Flesteparten av balladene, derimot, dateres til det 17. eller 18. århundre. Selv om kan man regne med at noen har svært gammelt opphav, er det bare en håndfull som beviselig skriver seg fra før 1600. Videre er det bare få av melodiene som er like gamle som tekstene.
